PODGORICA, 5 OCTOBER 2024 – On World Teachers’ Day, celebrated today, UNICEF is calling for teachers to be placed at the heart of education system reform, as they are the key pillars of quality education.
“To achieve a high quality of education, it is necessary to have the teaching profession become prestigious so that the best students who desire to become teachers find it attractive to do so. Also, it is crucial to support them with relevant career trainings during university. It is essential to continuously offer teacher trainings on different topics to all teachers in the country,” UNICEF Montenegro Representative Michele Servadei said.
The UNICEF-supported Montenegro’s Education Sector Analysis 2015–2020 showed that only one in four teachers attend programmes for professional development. This study also points out the need to improve the professional development of teachers by increasing the relevance of their studies for contemporary teaching practice, ensuring effective school practice as part of initial teacher education and making professional development courses more relevant and available to all teachers.
Based on the findings of this analysis, UNICEF, together with the EU, is supporting the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation to develop a new Education System Reform Strategy for the period 2025–2035.
For the education reform to be successful, it is necessary to actively involve all stakeholders, especially teachers, parents and students, in its development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.
Teachers in Njegoš Primary School in Spuž shared their recommendations for the education reform.
“For better quality education in Montenegro, there needs to be closer cooperation between parents and teachers,” Dušanka Samardžić, a teacher from this school said.
To share how important teachers are for quality education and children’s development, UNICEF Montenegro’s young reporters are today launching a social media campaign with stories about their best teachers.
“I went through a period of feeling lonely and vulnerable because of the bullying I was experiencing in school. Fortunately, I had a teacher by my side. She encouraged me not to give up on my education,” said Jasmina Beriša, a UNICEF Montenegro young reporter in her TikTok video message for World Teachers’ Day.
UNICEF Montenegro young reporter Marko Zečević remembers his best teacher for teaching him to think for himself and to be cosmopolitan.
World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It is an opportunity to recall the important role of teachers and other professionals in the education system in the growth and development of every child and the right of every girl and every boy to education.
