PODGORICA, 23 December 2020 – Almost all citizens of Montenegro (90 percent) will be spending New Year’s Eve at home and only with members of their household. This was confirmed in the latest Ipsos research on the topic of coronavirus, conducted in the period from 15 to 18 December on a nationally representative sample, with the support of the British Embassy in Podgorica and UNICEF.

It is heartening to see that the great majority of people plan to spend New Year at home with their family – and that’s even before the extra measures for the holiday season were announced. I will be one of those people. But I will be seeing my family at midnight hundreds of miles away - via a screen!  We only have to do this for one strange year, after all.

Karen Maddocks, British Ambassador to Montenegro

As in October, four-fifths of citizens (80%) are concerned that they personally or persons close to them could get infected, and over two-thirds of citizens (71%) perceive coronavirus as a serious threat to the country.

I wish to thank all citizens who will be celebrating New Year in their own households. It is a time when we all yearn for our relatives and friends, but still, only for this year, we are calling on all citizens to find other ways to preserve the warmth of relationship with those who are close to them. I am sure that this will bring us a step closer to ending the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michaela Bauer, UNICEF Montenegro Deputy Representative

Citizens are receiving information about coronavirus mostly through national television, followed by news portals on the internet. As in previous research, almost all citizens (95%) say that they are informed about this topic.

Data on the main sources of information about the coronavirus point out to the huge social responsibility of the media during the pandemic. Since citizens will be celebrating New Year’s Eve with their families at home, it is important that the media, especially national televisions, offer them a quality programme and timely and accurate information about the coronavirus.

Vladimir Raičević, Director of the research agency Ipsos in Montenegro

The nationally representative sample for this survey consists of 807 citizens aged 18 and above. Data collection was conducted through a telephone survey, with a questionnaire lasting, on average, 10 minutes, in the period from 15 to 18 December of the current year. The key findings of this, as well as previous research on the knowledge, views and behaviour of citizens regarding coronavirus are available on the UNICEF Montenegro website.
