Highlights
Health workers are at the core of the health system’s functionality and are crucial to a country’s efforts to achieve its health priorities. They need to be equitably distributed and accessible to the population, possess the required competencies, and be motivated and empowered to deliver quality care.
The health system in Montenegro is designed to provide the necessary services for child wellbeing. The system ensures coverage for the entire population, offering free access to healthcare for children. Primary healthcare services provide comprehensive and regular contact for pregnant women, newborns and children through Chosen Doctors, Support Centres and home visits by patronage nurses.
Health indicators, such as infant and neonatal mortality rates and life expectancy, position Montenegro close to or even above European averages. However, analyses have shown that there are areas needing improvement (declining immunization coverages and access to early intervention). With the recently introduced Early Childhood Development Strategy and the Health System Development Strategy, the country aims to strengthen the capacities of the primary healthcare system and consequently improve access to health care for all children in Montenegro.
The report Analysis of the human resources for MCH at health centres in Montenegro aims to screen and map the human resources in primary health care, focusing on the health workforce involved in providing services to children. The report analyses the established standards for the health workforce, compares the available workforce to these standards, evaluates workforce performance by analysing the services provided, and assesses the risks of future gaps in the needed health workers.
The report Montenegro Health Budget Review analyses the public funds allocated to the health system in Montenegro, examining how these funds are distributed and utilized within the healthcare infrastructure, focusing on spending on the primary healthcare level and maternal and child health.
