Building Futures: Securing Child Rights and Responding to the Adolescent Challenge
A UNICEF report on the situation of the children and adolescents in Maldives
Highlights
Over the past decades, Maldives has achieved impressive milestones including low child mortality, high immunization coverage, and near-universal access with gender parity to basic education. These achievements have positioned the country as a regional and global leader in advancing children’s rights and human development.
However, currently, Maldives faces a complex and urgent “adolescent challenge,” characterized by stagnation and emerging disparities in education, health, and protection that threaten to erode earlier progress and deepen inequalities for a generation of children and young people. The report calls for sustaining the gains and a targeted, multi-sectoral response to address adolescents’ evolving needs.
