UNICEF welcomes Shairose Mawji as new Representative to Liberia

MONROVIA, 15 September 2026 – UNICEF is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Shairose Mawji as UNICEF Representative to Liberia.

Ms. Mawji brings more than 20 years of leadership and public health experience across Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, spanning both humanitarian and development contexts. Throughout her career, she has led complex country programmes, strengthened partnerships with governments and development partners, mobilized resources, and advanced policies and programmes to improve outcomes for children and communities. 

Most recently, Ms. Mawji served as Deputy Representative for UNICEF Jordan, where she provided strategic leadership for the country programme, supported policy advocacy and resource mobilization, and helped guide the delivery of results for children. Prior to Jordan, she held senior UNICEF leadership and emergency roles in Bangladesh, Nepal, India and Afghanistan, including leading large-scale humanitarian responses and field operations.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Mawji worked in Tanzania with a non-governmental organization, gaining valuable experience in community-based health and development programmes in Africa. This experience contributed to her strong commitment to locally driven solutions and partnerships that improve the lives of children and families.

A public health specialist by training, Ms. Mawji holds a Master of Science in Public Health in Developing Countries from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of British Columbia. Her professional foundation also includes qualifications and experience in midwifery, tropical disease, and community health.
