Metsi a Lesotho Rural WASH Programme
About
Metsi a Lesotho Rural WASH Programme is a transformative initiative supported by the European Union, UNICEF, Government of Lesotho, and partners to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services for rural communities across Lesotho. The programme focuses on addressing persistent inequalities in access to essential WASH services by reaching remote and underserved villages, schools and healthcare facilities.
As part of the broader Metsi-A- Lesotho Action, the Rural WASH Programme is restoring and upgrading existing rural water supply systems, constructing new infrastructure, and strengthening local capacities for sustainable water resources management. Through these investments, the programme aims to improve access to basic WASH services in 250 rural communities, 125 schools and 15 healthcare facilities, contributing to better health, education outcomes and resilience for thousands of people.
Launched in 2024, Metsi a Lesotho forms part of the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, which supports sustainable investments that strengthen climate resilience, human development and essential services. By expanding access to safe water and sanitation in rural areas, the programme is helping to create healthier, more resilient communities and improve the wellbeing of children and families across Lesotho.
