UNICEF, in partnership with the LEGO Foundation, has embarked on an innovative mission: to harness the social, emotional, and developmental power of play.  This initiative offers children tailored opportunities to express their emotions, develop social awareness, and learn positive coping mechanisms through play.

LEGO® bricks, transcending their role as toy, has become a cornerstone of this program. They serve as tools for children to process feelings of stress and trauma through creative construction. As children build together, they are not merely creating structures, but they are also rebuilding their confidence and resilience. This simple yet profound act gives them a sense of control and freedom, empowering them to combat distress. As young Sindos, aged 7, enthusiastically says, "Building with LEGO bricks is fun! I can play with my friends and cousins!" This sentiment is echoed by Rahaf, also 7, who adds, "I feel happy when I play with LEGO. I play with my mum and friends!"

The philosophy underpinning this initiative, 'learning through play,' promotes physical growth and the development of critical cognitive skills. Through play, children cultivate creative thinking and problem-solving abilities, essential for navigating the complexities of the modern world. Play also fosters personal traits such as empathy, perseverance, and collaboration— all qualities that are indispensable for success in adulthood.

Central to UNICEF's mission is nurturing creative, engaged, lifelong learners. The organization believes that children are intrinsically motivated to play, making it a naturally effective medium for significant learning and development. Play is not merely entertainment; it is a crucial element in the holistic development of children, equipping them to face future challenges with resilience and adaptability.

In Lebanon, the impact of play is profound. Many children have reported that playing makes them happier and helps them forget the pressures of daily life. Over 90% of parents have noticed that playful activities contribute to a happier disposition in their children and bring relaxation to the entire family. Maysaa, a caregiver, reflects on this, noting, "I love seeing the children play and just be themselves!"

Facilitators and caregivers trained to create environments that encourage children to explore and experiment freely, play a pivotal role akin to providing a nutritious meal—they nourish the children’s minds and emotions. In these spaces, children learn to express and manage their emotions, solve problems, and enhance their physical coordination.

One of the most compelling aspects of this program is its accessibility. The essence of effective play is not found in expensive toys or vast amounts of time but in the simple gifts of creativity, imagination, and a supportive presence. Aysha, another caregiver, highlights the educational value of the initiative: "These activities are dynamic and educational. Children love to build and these materials help reinforce this."

Through its innovative partnership with the LEGO Foundation, UNICEF is setting the foundation for a generation of Lebanese children who are better equipped to thrive in an ever-evolving world. By weaving play into the fabric of learning and development, UNICEF and the LEGO Foundation are crafting a brighter, more resilient future for these young learners.
