With more than half of Lao PDR’s population comprised of young people below the age of 25, the country is brimming with vast potential. By leveraging the nation’s young bright minds and their unique voices to champion positive change in our communities, we stand to better address the most pressing issues affecting young people today, from climate change and mental health to the post-pandemic learning crisis.

Enter ‘Youth Champions Laos’, an initiative by UNICEF Lao PDR in partnership with the Lao Youth Union and supported by the UNICEF International Council and UNICEF Australia. Through this initiative, we aim to meaningfully engage with young people in Lao PDR across all walks of life: to hear from them about how such issues are impacting their lives and develop their skills to advocate and implement solutions to them alongside their communities. Through a series of youth-led advocacy trainings across Vientiane Capital, Savannakhet and Xiengkhouang, young advocates will develop the necessary leadership and advocacy skills to bring about real positive change in their communities. Following the trainings, they will also be provided with seed funding to kickstart their own advocacy projects as well.

Phoyphaylinh, from Savannakhet province, Lao PDR Phoyphaylinh, from Savannakhet province, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "What was most useful for me in this training is the part on how to begin planning your advocacy project. All problems can be broken down into smaller chunks so that we can see the problem more accurately and can take the step to start addressing it ourselves." - Phoyphaylinh, youth from Savannakhet province
Kamonlat, from Savannakhet province, Lao PDR Kamonlat, from Savannakhet province, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "I was happily surprised by the topic of mental health during the trainings. This is a new topic for Savannakhet youth, especially coming from a training organised by UNICEF. The training opened my eyes to things about my own mental health that I hadn't considered before." - Kamonlat, youth from Savannakhet province
Bouathong, from Savannakhet province, Lao PDR Bouathong, from Savannakhet province, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "I used to think that writing your own project plans was very difficult, that is until I attended this training. I've learned that it helps a lot to think and plan in steps. I think that now I am more confident to plan my own future projects and am aware of the concrete steps I can take to begin." - Bouathong, youth from Savannakhet province
Maichue, from Xiengkhouang province, Lao PDR Maichue, from Xiengkhouang province, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "I enjoyed the session on networking the most during our training. I find it very relevant to my own life and it contains practical tips that I can use when I do my projects." - Maichue, youth from Xiengkhouang province
Ju, from Xiengkhouang province, Lao PDR Ju, from Xiengkhouang province, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "I was impressed by the little energizers we did in the training where we gave a “power whoosh” to other participants after they spoke or presented. It really helped create a positive and supportive atmosphere during our training.” - Ju, youth from Xiengkhouang province
Maisee, from Xiengkhouang province, Lao PDR Maisee, from Xiengkhouang province, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "I liked the emphasis during the trainings on open discussions and I enjoyed the opportunity for us all to share our perspectives with others." - Maisee, youth from Xiengkhouang province
Khanlaya, from Vientiane, Lao PDR Khanlaya, from Vientiane, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "Youth voices matter. I want our society to recognize and understand the challenges we face. I especially want people to be more open in considering the perspectives of the newer generation on various societal issues today." - Khanlaya, youth from Vientiane Capital
Phadthady, from Vientiane, Lao PDR Phadthady, from Vientiane, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "What I found most useful from the three-day training was the group exercise on planning our advocacy project and presenting it as if we were implementing it right now. Receiving feedback from peers on how to make the project feasible was especially helpful and will aid us to continue working on our project plans after the training." - Phadthady, youth from Vientiane Capital
Vilatda, from Vientiane, Lao PDR Vilatda, from Vientiane, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "This was my first workshop experience, but it did not feel like that at all. The content was easy to understand and there was an emphasis on open discussions." - Vilatda, youth from Vientiane Capital
Bowling, from Vientiane, Lao PDR Bowling, from Vientiane, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "Young people are facing a lot of stress in their lives. Sometimes, that pressure comes not from within our families but from today’s highly competitive social environment. I find that this can lead many young people to develop mental health issues. Overall access to support is still limited but I was impressed by the little activities we did during the training where we shared our personal and useful ways of dealing with stress." - Bowling, youth from Vientiane Capital
Papoui, youth from Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR Papoui, youth from Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "What I like most was working as a group to design our advocacy project plan which fostered great discussions and sparked many new ideas for us." - Papoui, youth from Vientiane Capital
Khuanthip, from Vientiane, Lao PDR Khuanthip, from Vientiane, Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR /2024/SSilichamphone "I liked that in the training we were not given fixed topics to discuss. Our society today is grappling with many challenges, one of which is drug abuse. It is much easier nowadays for people to gain access to addictive substances. Even children under 18 years of age can easily access those substance as well." - Khuanthip, youth from Vientiane Capital
