Today, as we approach International Women's Day, I'm inspired by the strong spirit of Lao PDR's people, especially our girls and women. Today is not just a celebration; it's a reaffirmation of our shared commitment to a future where every girl and woman is empowered to rewrite her story on her own terms.

During my journey with UNICEF in Lao PDR, I have had the privilege of meeting girls and women in every province – often beside my good friends at the Lao Women’s Union. Each encounter, each shared story, has been a testament to the resilience and potential that lies within our daughters, our sisters, our mothers.

I've met young girls, bright-eyed and eager, whose dreams are as vast as the open skies. Yet, for too many, these dreams are clouded by barriers—barriers to education, barriers erected by child marriage and early pregnancy, barriers born from outdated norms and practices.

But here's what I've learned: these barriers are not insurmountable.

If there's one belief that has been a guiding star in my personal journey, it's the transformative power of education. Education is more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. It's the key that unlocks the potential within a girl, giving her the courage to dream big and the means to chase those dreams. I have lived this dream.

In Lao PDR, we are committed to ensuring that every girl has access to the education she deserves, because when we educate a girl, we educate a nation.

The stories of girls and women I've met are not just tales of challenges faced; they are narratives of overcoming, of resilience, of the courage to challenge the status quo. From young women leading community initiatives to girls breaking cycles of poverty through education, their stories inspire change. They remind us that when we protect girls from child marriage and early pregnancy, we're not just safeguarding their rights—we're securing the future of a nation.

Changing the narrative for girls and women means challenging deep-seated norms and practices. It's a journey we undertake together, hand in hand, step by step. Through dialogue, education, and advocacy, we're beginning to see shifts in perceptions. We're witnessing communities come together to champion the rights of girls and women, paving the way for a society where gender equality is not just an aspiration, but a reality.

The progress we seek cannot be achieved by one person, one organization, or even one government alone. It's the product of our collective will, our shared vision for a brighter future. It's forged in the fires of our determination to see every girl and woman empowered to lead, to innovate, to thrive.

As we commemorate International Women's Day, let us draw inspiration from the stories of those we've met, the challenges we've overcome, and the victories we've celebrated. Let us recommit ourselves to the work ahead, buoyed by the belief that together, we can create a world where every girl and woman in Lao PDR can rise, unburdened by the past, and soar into a future filled with hope and promise.
