NEW YORK, 25 September 2024 — UNICEF and CAF –development bank of Latin America and the Caribbean – today signed an agreement on the margins of the 79th session of the United National General Assembly (UNGA) to enhance joint programmes and solutions that will defend the rights of children in the region.
The six-year agreement focuses on expanding collaboration on comprehensive care during early childhood; strengthening early education and foundational learning; promoting life skills and school-to-work transition; improving water, sanitation, and hygiene; transforming health systems; reducing of all forms of malnutrition; and protecting children’s rights in emergency contexts.
“This partnership agreement marks a significant milestone in our shared commitment to protecting the rights of children across Latin America and the Caribbean.”
- UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell
As 2030 approaches, Latin America and the Caribbean is on track to achieving less than half of child-related Sustain Development Goal (SDG) targets. In the region, nearly half of children live in poverty and four in five 10-year-olds cannot read a simple text. One in four of them live in areas impacted by at least four environmental shocks.
“By joining forces with UNICEF, we are making a commitment to the well-being and creation of new life opportunities for the children of Latin America and the Caribbean. This partnership aligns with CAF’s vision of promoting comprehensive investments in early childhood through care, redefinition, and support throughout all stages of early childhood, which are essential for future adults,” said Sergio Díaz-Granados, Executive President of CAF.
The partnership between UNICEF and CAF also includes collaboration for the design, development, and evaluation of innovative initiatives, information exchange, evidence generation, technical training courses and e-learning activities, and support to countries for governance, data generation, analysis, and dissemination, among other areas.
