Makani Centre: A Haven for Learning and Playing in Azraq Camp

“Makani centre is a very important place for me,” says Najlaa, an 11-year-old in grade five. At the Makani centre, Najlaa learns Arabic, mathematics, and computer skills while also enjoying the playground and participating in sports like football.
Although Najlaa attends school, she finds that the additional lessons at the Makani centre deepen her understanding of Arabic and mathematics, leading to better grades. “When I study these subjects here, I learn more about them, and my knowledge improves,” she explains.
Najlaa's favorite activity at the Makani centre is playing. “It‘s the only place where I can play freely,” she says. The centre features a beautiful playground with swings and slides, as well as a football field where she enjoys spending time with her friends.
The Makani centre also offers various clubs, including a reading recovery that Najlaa loves. “The reading recovery is so much fun because we get to read a lot of stories,” she shares. Through the club, she has improved her Arabic grammar and spelling, positively impacting her school performance. “After I joined the reading recovery, my reading at school also improved,” she adds, noting the praise she has received from her teachers.
The Makani centre, supported by various partnerships and funding, aims to provide a safe and enriching environment for children like Najlaa. The programme's objectives include enhancing educational outcomes, offering psychosocial support (PSS) activities and promoting overall wellbeing and development.
Both participants and organizers see the Makani centre as a vital resource for the community, with hopes for continued growth and greater impact in the future.
