At 13 years old, Ronyas Ahmad Askar has a clear vision for her future. “I want to become a judge,” she says, her voice steady with determination. “I believe in a world where justice prevails.”
Ronyas, a grade-eight student from Chamchamal in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, lives with her mother, grandmother, two aunts, and an older brother. Her parents are separated, but she has found strength in her close-knit family. Over the past three years, another place has become just as important to her—the Child Protection Center in Chamchamal.
A Place to Grow
Ronyas first heard about the center from her friends, who spoke excitedly about the programmes they attended. Intrigued, she decided to give it a try. “I registered my name three years ago and haven’t looked back,” she says.
The center offers free courses in English and Arabic, along with sessions on life skills, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) services and personal development. For Ronyas, it has been a transformative experience. “I’ve learned so much here. The English classes have strengthened my reading, writing, and speaking skills. My grades have improved significantly, and now I’m excelling beyond my peers.” she says proudly.
Unlocking Potentials
The benefits of the center extend far beyond learning. “I used to be shy and hesitant to speak with others, but now I feel confident,” Ronyas shares. “I’ve built strong friendships and truly feel a sense of belonging here.” she adds.
One of her favorite activities is the music sessions. “Learning to play an instrument helps me release stress and enjoy my time. It’s such a fun way to start the day before our English classes,” she explains.
Ronyas comes to the center five times a week, where she feels supported and encouraged to grow. “This place is like my second home,” she says with a warm smile.
In her free time, Ronyas immerses herself in drawing, reading books, and exploring new information on her mobile phone. Her dreams for the future are big yet deeply rooted in her passion for justice and fairness. “I want to make the world a better place, and becoming a judge will help me do that,” she says with conviction.
Making a Difference in Chamchamal
The Child Protection Center in Chamchamal, a government-run facility under the Directorate of Labour and Social Affairs (DOLSA) of Sulaymaniyah Governorate, is changing the lives of adolescents like Ronyas. Supported by UNICEF and generously funded by the French Committee, the German Development Bank (KfW), and USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), the center provides free, high-quality programs that empower young people with the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
“The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) sessions here have changed me,” Ronyas reflects. “I’ve learned to manage my time effectively, build my confidence, and dream bigger than ever before. This center hasn’t just supported me, it has given me a future filled with hope and possibility.”
As Ronyas looks ahead to her dreams, the lessons she’s learned at the center serve as the solid foundation of her future. “This place has taught me that anything is possible,” she says, her face glowing with hope and determination.
