Erbil, Iraq, 23 May 2024 - In Debaga camp, among tents and temporary homes, Russul's story unfolds. She is a 10-year-old girl living with her parents, three sisters and two brothers in Qaraj district in Ninewa governorate. The family was displaced due to the conflict and sought refuge in Debaga camp.
Amid this new reality, education seemed like a distant dream. Russul and her siblings had not set foot in a school. Overwhelmed by the challenges of displacement, Russul’s parents had not registered her in formal education when she was of age. But with the temporary learning center at the camp, which is supported by UNICEF and funded by European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), Russul found an opportunity to learn. The center equips children like Russul with literacy and numeracy skills.
Discovering the World of Letters and Numbers
Russul joined the literacy and numeracy programme at the camp. Learning letters and numbers opened up a whole new world for her. "Now I know the alphabet and the numbers, I can read and write," said Russul with pride.
The center offered a variety of recreational activities, including life skills in support of children. From drawing and playing football to engaging in handcrafts, every moment was infused with joy and discovery. But the most valuable opportunity for Russul was the friendships she forged.
"I enjoy my time here," Russul expressed with a smile. "I got to know new friends." Among them were Sedra, Sura, Samar, and Sarab, kindred spirits who shared her journey of learning and growth. Together, they navigated the challenges they faced, finding solace and comfort in each other's company.
Reflecting on her progress, Russul marveled at how far she had come. "Before coming here, I didn't even know how to write my name," she confessed. Now, equipped with literacy skills and a supportive community, Russul was hopeful.
For Russul, this journey was just the beginning. As she took her first steps towards a brighter tomorrow, she knew that no matter where life may lead her, she would always cherish the lessons learned and the friendships forged at the simple camp that had become her present home.
