Children with disabilities face persistent barriers to education. They are among the most likely to miss out on opportunities to learn and develop skills for employment, independent living, and full community participation. UNICEF, in collaboration with the State Welfare Organization (SWO) and the Ministry of Education, has supported trainings for community-based rehabilitation volunteers to enhance inclusive education and rehabilitation services for 270 children living with disabilities in eastern provinces of Iran.

This programme, funded by the European Union (EU), was initiated in Khorasan Jonoubi and Khorasan Razavi provinces in December 2022 and will continue through mid-June 2023. In the first month, 60 volunteers received training on the education and rehabilitation of children living with disabilities, including on how to engage families and the community. Following the training, each volunteer will provide educational and rehabilitation services for three to five children per week for six months in the rural and hard-to-reach areas of the two provinces.

UNICEF will continue to work with the SWO and the Ministry of Education to build the capacity of community workers and teachers in hard-to-reach areas to improve access to inclusive education opportunities for all children living with disabilities.
