The World Bank and UNICEF deliver 80 tons of medicines and vaccines to enhance the well-being of children and women in Guinea-Bissau

The shipment is part of a trilateral agreement through which UNICEF is supporting the delivery of essential supplies purchased by Guinea-Bissau’s Ministry of Public Health, with financing provided by the World Bank

Bissau (Guinea-Bissau), June 23, 2023 – The World Bank and UNICEF today delivered USD 1.3 million worth of medicines, hospital equipment and vaccines to the Ministry of Public Health of Guinea-Bissau, as a way to support of the government in improving maternal and childcare. The arrival of the shipment of critical supplies was marked by a small ceremony attended by Guinea-Bissau’s State Secretary for Hospital Management, the World Bank Resident Representative and the UNICEF Country Representative.

The shipment is part of a trilateral agreement through which UNICEF is supporting the delivery of over 80 tons of essential supplies purchased by Guinea-Bissau’s Ministry of Public Health with financing provided by the World Bank within the framework of the Strengthening Maternal and Child Health Service Delivery in Guinea‐Bissau project.

This consignment includes, among other things, vaccines needed for the routine vaccination of children and women, which can be critical for their wellbeing, essential medicines and hospital supplies.

“The hospital supplies, medicines and vaccines that we are delivering today to the Ministry of Public Health will be fundamental in supporting the national health system and in filling existing gaps in the country's health structures and hospitals”, says Anne-Lucie Lefebvre, World Bank Resident Representative in Guinea-Bissau.

The World Bank and UNICEF work closely with the Government and other partners to support the health sector in Guinea-Bissau and to reduce maternal and child mortality in the country.

"As part of this joint work, UNICEF is proud of the role it has played in ensuring the acquisition and transportation of over 80 tons of essential medicines to Guinea-Bissau, which will surely contribute to the improvement of primary health care for many children in Guinea-Bissau and therefore to the survival of many of them," said UNICEF Representative in Guinea-Bissau.

The “Strengthening Maternal and Child Health Service Delivery in Guinea‐Bissau” project is a 7-year project funded by the World Bank, with a total budget of 25 million USD, which aims to improve the coverage of essential maternal and child health services in the country.
