At Tinishu Meti Secondary School, in Godere woreda (district), Gambela region, Birkinesh Yadesa Nagawo, a dedicated English teacher, has been shaping young minds for the past 26 years. Her commitment to her students goes beyond the confines of the classroom, extending into ensuring their overall well-being.

Expressing her gratitude, Birkinesh reflects on the transformative impact of UNICEF's provision of Iron-Folic Acid Supplements to the students. "I am very grateful to UNICEF for providing the supplements," she acknowledges warmly. "Since its introduction, I have witnessed a remarkable change in our students. They are no longer stressed, and absenteeism has significantly decreased. The supplements have made it easier for them to concentrate and engage in their studies."

Recalling her own school days, Birkinesh reminisces about a time when such provisions were not available. "Compared to my schooling experience, having access to these supplements brings immense pleasure to our students. It's heartwarming to see them coming to school eagerly and without hesitation," she shares.

As an English teacher, Birkinesh plays a crucial role in the lives of her students, especially the girls. Her unique bond with them has earned her the responsibility of distributing the supplements.

Sixteen-year-old Kidist was struggling to concentrate in class and felt uncomfortable due to irregular periods. But since starting the iron-folic acid supplementation program, she has noticed a significant difference. “I have more energy for sports and feel sharper in class,” she says. “I am proud to be a part of this program and grateful for the support of my teacher, Birkinesh.”

A ray of hope emerged with the weekly Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation Programme and the Menstrual Health and Hygiene Programme. These initiatives, designed to address the needs of adolescent girls, have profoundly impacted Kidist's life. Every Tuesday, her teacher Birkinesh visits Kidist's class with a small pink pill. Their teacher explained: "The Iron and Folic Acid Supplement is a micronutrient supplement that helps your body grow and prevents iron deficiency anemia." Slowly Kidist noticed the difference. She now has more energy for sports and feels sharper in class.

The Menstrual Health and Hygiene Programme has not only provided girls with access to sanitary products but also empowered them to manage their periods confidently. “I used to miss classes because of my period, but now I understand my cycle better and feel prepared,” says Kidist.

"One day you will see menstruation, don't be ashamed about it," Aster gently advised her daughter. “I am proud to see my daughter confident and prepared to manage her periods,” she says. “The program has brought us closer together, and I am grateful for the open conversations we were able to have about menstruation."
