UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) Overview – 2024 Highlights

With 280 million children, the Eastern and Southern Africa region (ESAR), is home to the world’s fastest-growing youth population. Despite facing significant challenges from high child mortality and food insecurity to climate shocks and public health emergencies, UNICEF works across 21 countries to protect the rights of children and ensure access to essential services.

In 2024, the region made notable progress in health, nutrition, education, WASH, protection, and humanitarian response, supported by strategic partnerships and nearly USD $2 billion in supplies.

Through strategic partnerships and evidence-based advocacy, UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) continues to invest in the future of children, focusing on resilience, equity, and sustainable development.

This document captures the scope, achievements, and ongoing priorities driving UNICEF’s mission for every child in Eastern and Southern Africa.
