An integrated model to prevent family separation for children with disabilities in Rwanda
About
This case study presents an integrated, multi-sectoral model piloted in Rwanda to prevent the separation of children with disabilities from their families. Implemented in Huye and Bugesera districts, the model brings together child protection, health, education, social protection, and water and sanitation services. It focuses on early identification, inclusive education, community-based rehabilitation, parenting support, and social norm change to reduce stigma. The pilot demonstrates how coordinated, community-level interventions can empower families to care for children with disabilities and promote their inclusion in society.
