NAIROBI, 12 October 2026 – “UNICEF is deeply saddened by the deaths of at least 139 people, including 15 children, after a migrant boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti late last week.

“The vessel was carrying just over 300 migrants, and several people remain missing.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with the survivors and families who have lost loved ones.

“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the dangers that migrants face while trying to seek a better life and economic opportunities.

“It underscores the need to protect and support children and families to be able to move safely, without having to risk their lives.

“UNICEF remains committed to working with the Government of Djibouti to protect children’s safety and wellbeing at all times.”
