23 April 2019
Мать держит ребенка на руках.

WHAT: A symposium bringing together governments and experts in health, food and agriculture from eight countries: Central Asia, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan to improve healthy diets among children and adolescents.

Participants are expected to discuss and agree on cross-border actions to ensure child-centered sustainable food systems and improved nutrition governance.

The symposium is being organized as part of the Regional Nutrition Capacity Development and Partnership Platform’s Plan of Action which was launched with the commitment of all 8 participating countries in July 2018. The Kazakhstan Government is the Secretariat Chair for two years.

WHY: According to the 2018 Global Nutrition Report:

  • The Region faces a double burden of malnutrition among children and adolescents with more than 10 per cent of children not reaching their potential height growth, while at the same time, obesity rates are rapidly increasing (by over 80 per cent since 2000).
  • The current prevalence of child obesity in Central Asia is estimated to be the second highest globally (10.7 per cent), while the number of overweight under five-year-old children has doubled from 1.6 million to 3.2 million between 2000 to 2017.
  • Current food systems and nutrition governance have failed to protect children against this double-burden, therefore states need to invest further to secure healthier diets for children and adolescents.

WHERE: Hotel Radisson, 4 Sary Arka ave, Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan

WHEN: 24 to 26 April 2019

WHO: The Symposium is organized by the UNICEF Europe and Central Asia Regional Office with the support of the Government of Kazakhstan and other UN Agencies.
