Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation: A call to action
Cameroon joined the global community in celebrating Girls in ICT Day
Douala, April 24, 2025 — Cameroon joined the global community in celebrating Girls in ICT Day under the compelling theme : "Girls in ICT for Inclusive Digital Transformation." This significant day served not only to spotlight the potential of young girls in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), but also to catalyse actions toward a more equitable digital future.
Organised with the collaboration of key stakeholders, including UNICEF, the event was a vivid testament to the growing urgency of bridging the gender digital divide. UNICEF, a leading advocate for children's rights and empowerment, took centre stage with a strong message: no girl should be left behind in the digital revolution. The agency called for increased investment in education, digital skills training, and creating safe, inclusive online environments where girls can learn, innovate, and lead.
In Cameroon, where disparities in ICT access are still pronounced, particularly for young girls in rural and marginalised communities, the urgency of inclusive digital transformation cannot be overstated.
As UNICEF stressed, meaningful change demands collaborative efforts. Governments, private sector leaders, civil society, and philanthropic organisations must unite to invest in long-term strategies that empower girls in ICT. This includes scaling up digital literacy programs, providing accessible technology, fostering mentorship networks, and actively dismantling the socio-cultural barriers that hinder girls' participation in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Today, as Cameroon steps forward in its digital transformation journey, the call is clear: Invest in girls. Invest in a more inclusive, innovative, and prosperous future for all.
Donors and partners are urged to join UNICEF and national stakeholders in making inclusive digital transformation not just an ambition, but a reality.
