Yaounde, April 24, 2025 – The Government of Japan just contributed US$1.35 million to UNICEF to address the urgent needs of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees, and vulnerable children affected by humanitarian crises in the Far North, North-West, and South-West regions of Cameroon. This generous contribution aims to improve the well-being and resilience of the targeted populations, addressing both immediate and long-term needs through sustainable and community-driven interventions.

Cameroon faces complex humanitarian crises, including armed conflict, intercommunal violence, disease outbreaks, and climate shocks. The Far North, North-West, and South-West regions are the most affected, with severe needs in food security, health, and WASH services.

“We are committed to supporting the most vulnerable populations in Cameroon through our partnership with UNICEF,” said Minami Kentaro, Japan Ambassador to Cameroon. “This contribution reflects Japan’s dedication to humanitarian assistance and our belief in building resilient communities that can thrive despite challenges. This funding will provide critical support to improve health, nutrition, and WASH services, fostering resilience and stability in affected communities

The project, which will run from March 2025 to March 2026, targets 63,000 direct beneficiaries and 126,000 indirect beneficiaries. Key interventions include improving access to life-saving treatment for severe acute malnutrition (SAM), strengthening public health emergency response, implementing emergency WASH interventions, and fostering positive behaviors through community engagement. These efforts will promote social cohesion, enhance young people’s participation in their communities, and support their engagement with the labor market.

UNICEF Cameroon expresses its deep gratitude to the Government of Japan for its longstanding partnership and generous support. “Sustainable funding is critical for UNICEF to invest in early recovery efforts and build back better for every child in Cameroon,” said Nadine Perrault, UNICEF Cameroon Representative.

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the people of Japan for their unwavering support and generosity, which will make a profound difference in the lives of vulnerable children and families in Cameroon."

The Government of Japan is among UNICEF’s top donors, and this contribution underscores the strong collaboration between UNICEF, the Embassy of Japan, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
