Bangladesh has made progress, but too many children are still being left behind.
Bangladesh is home to nearly 60 million children. Over the last decade, we have had more children surviving their early years, more mothers receiving skilled care during childbirth, and more children getting the chance to learn.
However, progress has not reached every child. Poverty, malnutrition, climate-related disasters, unsafe water and sanitation, and barriers to education and essential services still prevent children from reaching their full potential.
The latest national survey of children shows why there is still so much to do.
- Bangladesh records 22 newborn children’s deaths for every 1,000 live births, accounting for 67% of all under-five deaths.
- Nearly 1 in 2 girls in Bangladesh, about 4.1 million young women, still get married before they turn 18.
- At least 3.4 million children are currently living in street situations in Bangladesh without parental care.
- Only 39.3% of people in Bangladesh have access to safely managed drinking water that is free from E. coli and low in arsenic.
Despite funding constraints, in 2025, UNICEF reached over 330,000 children in Bangladesh with multisectoral life-saving support. Beyond emergencies, UNICEF continues to support millions of children and families through programmes that protect their health, education, nutrition and rights.
