Thanks to this generous contribution from AECID, the UNICEF humanitarian program in Algeria and their partners will be able to continue improving inclusive access to quality educational services for children living in Sahrawi refugee camps. The contribution will support the provision of materials for nearly 40,000 learners and their teachers, the payment of quarterly bonuses and training of 1,800 members of educational staff, training in psychosocial skills for schoolchildren through sports, training of teachers, capacity building for the implementation of school improvement plans, support for inclusive education and girls' education.
In addition to the education component, an ambitious program to improve access to quality health and nutrition services will be implemented in the five Sahrawi refugee camps. With the objectives of strengthening social behavior change to promote knowledge and adoption of positive attitudes, norms, beliefs and behaviors regarding nutrition to prevent all forms of malnutrition, undernutrition, nutritional deficiencies micronutrients and overweight.
AECID's contribution will also enable UNICEF to purchase essential vaccines to protect Sahrawi children against preventable diseases as well as strengthening the capacities of health personnel in obstetrics and maternal health, in addition to vaccines and cold chain management, to strengthen the health system.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to AECID for its renewed generosity and its strong humanitarian contribution to the well-being of Sahrawi refugee children and their families. Thanks to this donation, UNICEF will be able to continue to provide quality educational services as part of its five-year education strategy as well as maternal and child health services, particularly on vaccination. This will also allow us to begin a new part of our humanitarian program linked to nutrition to respond to an alarming situation in the Sahrawi refugee camps. This work that we will carry out with the help of all our partners is fully within the framework of the Sahrawi Refugee Response Plan (SRRP) 2024-2025 launched jointly in November 2023.
