Promotion of Child Rights: UNICEF and the Delegation of the European Union in Algeria sign a strategic partnership agreement

ALGIERS, November 28th, 2024 - UNICEF and the Delegation of the European Union in Algeria signed on Thursday, November 28th a partnership agreement for the promotion and protection of children’s rights.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the UNICEF office in Algiers by the UNICEF Representative in Algeria, Ms. Katarina Johansson, and the Ambassador of the European Union in Algeria, Mr. Diego Mellado, in the form of a donation of 450,000 euros.
The partnership between the EU in Algeria and UNICEF forms part of the 2023-2027 Country Programme of Cooperation between the Government of Algeria and UNICEF, which places child centered human development and social policies at the heart of national and sectoral priorities.
The contribution of the EU in Algeria will enable UNICEF to continue strengthening national efforts aimed at strengthening the child protection system and implementing the normative framework, especially Law 12-15 on Child Protection, with the Government and in synergy with the civil society working to promote and protect children’s rights.
The strong engagement with the Delegation of the EU in Algeria will also enable UNICEF to accelerate results for children by strengthening the capacities of social workers, parents, and adolescents themselves in terms of promoting child’s rights and the protection of children. The partnership will also promote positive social norms adapted to the national context for the promotion and protection of the rights of all children with a special emphasis on girls and boys with disabilities.
Speaking after the signing of the partnership agreement, UNICEF Representative in Algeria Katarina Johansson said: “I am delighted to celebrate this strategic partnership agreement with the Delegation of the European Union in Algeria. I thank the Ambassador for the commitment to children’s rights and thank the EU for the generosity and support to UNICEF’s work in Algeria. Thanks to this contribution, UNICEF and its partners will be able to accelerate the achievement the results of our country programme of cooperation with the Government of Algeria and thus advance the child rights agenda in Algeria. The partnership between UNICEF and the European Union is of strategic importance in placing the child rights agenda at the center of the priorities in Europe and around the world. Together with UNICEF, the EU has contributed significantly to improving the well-being and protection of children in 140 countries and territories.”
For his part, the Ambassador of the European Union to Algeria, Diego Mellado, said: "On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on Child Rights, the European Union is pleased to contribute, through the signing of this Convention, to national and international efforts for the defense and protection of children in vulnerable situations, in line with its commitments in this area."
