A Recipe for Change: Tereza’s Journey Toward Independence
Read the full story
Tereza, a 28-year-old woman, has faced challenges throughout her life. With only nine years of formal education, she was unable to continue to high school due to health issues. This left her feeling isolated and disconnected from the job market, spending most of her days at home.
The turning point came during an information session at Community Center No. 3, where families gathered to learn about opportunities. There, despite her shyness and difficulty speaking in public, Tereza found the courage to express her aspiration to enroll in a cooking course and eventually secure part-time employment.
Community centers are vital in fostering inclusion for shy individuals seeking vocational training by providing personalized support and mentorship that help them articulate their goals and navigate their training journey. They create a safe, welcoming environment through small-group settings and confidence-building workshops, making it easier for individuals to engage and express themselves. Additionally, community centers offer flexible learning options and organize community engagement activities that promote social interaction and build supportive peer networks.
Understanding Tereza's unique situation, the staff at YWCA Shkodër recognized the need for a personalized approach. They provided the encouragement and support she needed to take the first steps toward her dream. The staff introduced Tereza to the Youth Guarantee scheme, which helps young people gain skills and secure employment. Through the scheme, she was enrolled in a professional cooking course, a significant step that would change the trajectory of her life.
Today, Tereza attends her cooking classes with dedication and enthusiasm. She is not only learning to cook; she is also discovering new skills and a sense of belonging. This opportunity has given her hope and purpose she hadn't felt in years. Tereza dreams of proving to herself and others that, despite her health challenges, she can work independently and contribute meaningfully to her family and society.
