Beyond the Cash Assistance
A Child's Journey to Hope and Healing
Yusuf (name has been changed to respect child identity), an 11-year-old boy, came to Albania with his family on May 24th, 2024, fleeing from, Afghanistan. From the first time I saw him, I knew something wasn't right. He looked tired his skin was pale, and he seemed smaller and less developed than other kids his age. Worried, I arranged a visit with his family, and that's when I learned that Yusuf had been suffering from a blood disorder. His parents explained that whenever he got upset or angry, his blood levels would drop, making him extremely weak and forcing him to go to the hospital often for blood transfusions.
Unfortunately, they didn’t know exactly what was wrong with him.
Understanding how serious Yusuf’s condition was, and in consultation with the medical personnel in the area, it was decided to take him to Tirana Hospital for more tests. He was diagnosed with Thalassemia Major, a serious blood disorder. During his time in the hospital, Yusuf received several blood transfusions, but the tests also showed another serious problem, and the doctors warned that this was very dangerous and needed immediate treatment.
One challenge we faced was getting the medicine Yusuf needed. The treatment was only available at the hospital pharmacy, and to get it, Yusuf had to be an Albanian citizen with a health insurance card. Time was running out. We worked quickly with the Albanian authorities to get Yusuf a residence permit and health insurance card, and we managed to do all the paperwork in record time thanks to the close collaboration so that he could get the medicine he desperately needed.
UNICEF’s Cash-Plus Assistance was a huge help to Yusuf and his family. The monthly financial aid from UNICEF helped cover some of the costs for the family in this difficult medical journey. Beyond the financial support, UNICEF’s comprehensive approach, and multisectoral collaboration, Yusuf’s family had access to all the services he needed, including medical consultations, hospitalization, and essential medications.
Now, with a clear diagnosis and all the necessary documents, Yusuf is receiving regular treatment and blood transfusions. The change in him is incredible—he is now full of energy, lively, and able to do daily activities just, like any other child.
Yusuf’s journey, from uncertainty and illness to a clear diagnosis and life-saving treatment, shows the strength and determination of his family and the commitment of everyone involved in his care. UNICEF’s Cash-Plus Assistance played a crucial role in this journey, making sure Yusuf had access to the care he needed when he needed it most. Yusuf found peace and hope in Albania.
This assistance was made possible with the support of the U.S. government.
