Challenge
Over 2,500 children interact with the justice system every year, whether as alleged offenders, victims or witnesses of crime and for various violations of their human rights. The justice system is not yet friendly to and accessible by all children. Still too many children in conflict with the law are detained.
Solution
UNICEF supports Albania to develop legislation and policies in compliance with international standards governing child-friendly justice, supports public authorities’ capacities to implement these standards as well as to monitor implementation and ensure accountability of these authorities. This ultimately contributes to less children in detention, appropriate protection and remedies for violations of child rights, more children coming forward and claiming their rights.
