Highlights

Children have the right to an education. Where schools are not being reopened all children must have access to learning through alternative means. As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves and countries start easing lockdowns, UNICEF called for schools to reopen. When schools reopen, we need to look at not only measures to help keep students safe on school premises, but also on the journey to school. Not only can these measures help to keep students safe during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, they can also help to address other safety issues such as road traffic crashes, which are the number one killer of young people aged 5-29 years.
