Insights from Mali, Mauritania and the Niger
Building resilience in the Sahel through responding to the compounding impacts of climate change and conflict
Highlights
This case study addresses the complex interactions between climate change and conflict, and their adverse implications for children’s development, well-being and future resilience. The Building Resilience in the Sahel (BRS) Programme (2019-2023) in Mali, Mauritania and the Niger was grounded in a humanitarian–development–peace nexus approach and responded to both economic and non-economic losses and damages linked to the compounding impacts of climate shocks and fragility. With flexible, multi-year funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Programme strengthened resilience at individual, community and system levels over four years, and aligned its interventions with those of the World Food Programme and other partners operating in the same geographic region, working with the same communities.
