Highlights
West and Central Africa is the region with the highest mortality rates for mothers, stillbirths, newborns, and children under five. The situation is aggravated by humanitarian and fragile context. A significant acceleration is needed to reach the targets of the Sustainable Developmental Goals (SDGs) for maternal, neonatal and under-five mortality (SDG 3.1, SDG 3.2).
The Regional Consultation on Every Woman, Every Newborn, Everywhere and Child Survival Action in Dakar was organized from the 19th to the 22nd of November 2024 in Dakar, Senegal to support the countries to identify priority actions to accelerate progress towards achieving the SDGs.
This consultation revealed that the critical priority actions are to implement and scale up key high-impact interventions with quality, mobilizing primary health care including at the community level, linking these with appropriate care and services at referral health facilities through a functioning referral system.
The Regional Consultation also showed that countries have to address common and cross-cutting health system issues in order to deliver critical interventions along the life-course and the continuum of care. This consultation generated renewed energy for countries to move with urgency, clear priorities, continuous exchange of ideas and good practices for every woman, every mother, every newborn and every child to survive and thrive.
