According to the State of Global Air Report 2024, produced in partnership with UNICEF, more than 700,000 children aged under five years die each year worldwide due to air pollution.
Air pollution is a serious environmental challenge in Viet Nam, especially in large cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Monitoring data and air quality index (AQI) in these cities is often poor, with the concentrations of fine dust PM2.5 often exceeding the national technical standards on ambient air quality and World Health Organization recommendations. This is a sign that the sky is gradually losing its blue colour, with the public’s and especially children’s health affected every day.
“Clear Air - Colourful Lives” – A Message of Hope
In response, UNICEF Viet Nam’s new communication campaign, “Clear Air - Colourful Lives” calls on communities to take collective action to reduce air pollution and protect children’s health and future.
The campaign’s message is inspired by a visual contrast: when the air is clean, life’s colours appear vivid and sharp, symbolizing health and vitality. But when the air itself becomes “coloured” – visible with haze and dust – it reflects a world clouded by pollution, where people face grave risks to their well-being.
Empowering children’s voices
Through this campaign, adolescents and young people are given opportunities to raise their voices and share their perspectives through various experiential activities. A highlight is the Photovoice project – “storytelling through images.” Participants will be trained in photography and narrative thinking skills, enabling them to capture and reflect on environmental issues in their communities.
In addition, a nationwide online competition invites young people to propose innovative ideas or apply technology to create breakthrough solutions for improving air quality.
Their stories and ideas will be showcased at a public awareness exhibition on air pollution in Hanoi. The event will feature interactive games, interactive activities, and discussions – providing a platform not only to share children’s perspectives on air pollution, but also to connect them with policymakers and the wider community.
Through this campaign, UNICEF aims to nurture positive awareness among children, adolescents and communities, inspiring everyday actions that reduce pollution and fostering connections with green initiatives and sustainability efforts. By shaping awareness today, young people can become proactive citizens who protect the “colours” of life in the future.
Join UNICEF on the journey to clean the air for a brighter future. Protecting the air today means protecting the green of our future!
