Uganda will join the rest of the world to celebrate World Children’s Day, a day for children, by children. The Day celebrated on 20 November, is the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a treaty that explains who children are, all their rights, and the responsibilities of governments.

World Children’s Day also aims at highlighting critical issues affecting children’s lives as well as support the engagement of children and young people as advocates for their own rights.

This year this important day for children will be celebrated under very difficult circumstances, as the world grapples with the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on the populations. The Covid-19 pandemic has created extraordinary disruption to all sectors, but the education sector has been affected vastly.

In Uganda, the nationwide school closures in March 2020 disrupted the learning of more than 15 million children. School children from the poorest households, those living in rural areas, children with disabilities and girls have been affected more, bringing out huge inequalities in access to learning and its outcomes. Many children relied on meals provided at school, but this too is no more, greatly affecting their nutrition status. Since the pandemic was declared, everything has ceased to be ‘normal’.

In Uganda, UNICEF is mobilizing partners and planning a series of events under the theme ‘Reimagining the Future of Learning’ to raise awareness, amplify the voices of young people speaking out on the impact of Covid-19 on education, and highlight possible solutions, to commemorate the day.

Join us on World children's Day. This is how to:

Tune into UBC Television, NTV Television and Bukedde Television on Monday 30 November from 9:00 to 11:00am to be part of a media roundtable discussion under the theme ‘Reimagining the Future of Learning’.
