COVALIMA, 9 September 2020 – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), with support from the United States, today handed over to the Ministry of Health (MoH) equipment for the strengthening of health promotion corners in seven community health centers (CHCs) in Covalima Municipality. Communication materials focused on the prevention of COVID-19 were also launched, and will be stocked in these health promotion corners to help protect communities from COVID-19.

The handover ceremony took place at the Suai CHC in Covalima Municipality and was attended by Dr. Alipio Gusmao Lopes, representing the Director-General of Health Services, Ministry of Health; Valérie Taton, UNICEF Representative in Timor-Leste; and Mr. Elias Parra, United States Deputy Chief of Mission in Timor-Leste. Also present at the ceremony were Mr. Jim Wright, Mission Director, USAID; Mr. Miguel Armada, representing the Administrator of Covalima Municipality; Mr. Filipe Pereira Lemos, Director of Covalima Municipality Health Services; and other partners.

“The Ministry of Health warmly welcomes this handover of equipment for our health promotion corners and the ongoing commitment shown to the national COVID-19 response,” said Dr. Lopes. “We are grateful for this support from UNICEF, which is helping to protect and promote the health of every person in Timor-Leste, despite these challenging times.”

The equipment includes projectors and screens, DVD players, televisions, television stands, sound systems, computers, printers, cupboards, information boards and utensils to be used in cooking demonstrations. Together the equipment will create spaces where community members can interact with healthcare providers during outpatient visits and access essential health information, including on the prevention of COVID-19, as well as on nutrition, immunization and more.

“UNICEF is extremely pleased to be able to support the Ministry of Health alongside the United States in ensuring the health of the Timorese people remains front and center as we all combine our efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Valérie Taton, UNICEF’s Representative in Timor-Leste. “It is absolutely essential that even in the most trying of times, those who are the hardest to reach are not forgotten, and are not left behind. UNICEF and its partners are committed to supporting the continuation of essential health services for every child and their family, and empowering communities with the information they need to lead healthy lives.”

The handover of this equipment and materials is thanks to funding of US$500,000 from the United States to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Timor-Leste, and is part of a larger

partnership between UNICEF, USAID and the Ministry of Health, which also includes interventions that help to expand risk communications and community engagement, the provision of hygiene supplies, and data collection and analysis – all in the context of combatting coronavirus.

“COVID-19 is strong, but we are stronger,” said Mr. Parra. “This is why the work that UNICEF is doing, with support from the United States, is so important. Our partnership helps to strengthen infection prevention and control in health facilities and helps to ensure that all staff, patients and visitors are able to manage the virus and other diseases, via our collective focus on the promotion of handwashing and other hygiene practices.”
