Over 1400 children in residential care facilities to benefit

DILI, 29 April 2020 – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Timor-Leste handed over basic hygiene items to the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion (MSSI) today, as part of its ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 1400 children in nine municipalities will benefit from the distribution of these items in residential child care facilities registered with MSSI.

The hygiene items were handed over by UNICEF Timor-Leste Representative, Valérie Taton, to the Mr. Joao Coimbra, Chief of Cooperation and Partnership Unit of MSSI at a residential care facility for children in Dili.

“Children bear the brunt of every crisis, and the coronavirus pandemic is no exception,” said Valérie Taton, UNICEF Representative in Timor-Leste. “The distribution and use of the kits will ensure children in these facilities have an additional form of protection from COVID-19 and other diseases.”

The hygiene kits include cleaning products and personal hygiene items like soaps and towels for use by both children and administrators. All of the items cost close to USD 18,000. The provision of hygiene kits was funded by the Government of Japan.

UNICEF has also worked with MSSI to develop messages and communication material to help parents and community members protect children from the secondary impact of the pandemic such as violence at home, and is supporting a wide scope of interventions that seek to raise awareness on how communities can protect themselves and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
