New York, 31 Oktoba 2025 – Katibu Mkuu ana wasiwasi mkubwa kuhusu hali ilivyo katika Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania kufuatia uchaguzi mkuu wa tarehe 29 Oktoba, ikiwa ni pamoja na taarifa za vifo na majeruhi wakati wa maandamano. Analaani vifo vilivyotokea na anatuma salamu za rambirambi kwa familia za waathirika.

Anasisitiza umuhimu mkubwa wa kulinda haki za msingi, hususan haki ya kukusanyika kwa amani na uhuru wa kujieleza, ikiwa ni pamoja na upatikanaji wa taarifa. Anatoa wito wa kufanyika kwa uchunguzi wa kina na usio na upendeleo kuhusu tuhuma zote za matumizi ya nguvu kupita kiasi.

Katibu Mkuu pia ana wasiwasi mkubwa kuhusu taarifa za kutoweka na kukamatwa kwa watu katika kipindi cha kuelekea uchaguzi. Anazihimiza mamlaka kuhakikisha kuwa taratibu za kisheria zinafuatwa kwa wote waliokamatwa, kuhakikisha usalama wao, na kufanya uchunguzi wa kina na wa haki kuhusu tuhuma zote za ukiukwaji wa haki za binadamu kwa mujibu wa viwango vya kimataifa vya haki za binadamu.

Katibu Mkuu anatoa wito kwa wadau wote kuwa na kiasi, kukataa matumizi ya vurugu na kushiriki katika mazungumzo jumuishi na ya kujenga ili kushughulikia malalamiko na kuzuia kuzorota zaidi kwa hali ya usalama. Umoja wa Mataifa uko tayari kusaidia juhudi za kuendeleza mazungumzo, kuimarisha utawala wa kidemokrasia na kukuza amani endelevu nchini Tanzania.

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General - on the United Republic of Tanzania

New York, 31 October 2025 – The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by the situation in the United Republic of Tanzania following the general elections of 29 October, including reports of deaths and injuries during demonstrations. He deplores the loss of life and extends his condolences to the families of the victims.

He underscores the critical importance of safeguarding fundamental rights, notably the right of peaceful assembly and to freedom of expression including access to information. He calls for a thorough and impartial investigation into all allegations of excessive use of force.

The Secretary-General is also deeply troubled by reports of enforced disappearances and detentions in the lead-up to the elections. He urges the authorities to ensure due process for all those detained, ensure their safety and security, and conduct thorough and impartial investigations into all allegations of human rights violations in line with international human rights standards.

The Secretary-General calls on all stakeholders to exercise restraint, reject violence and engage in inclusive and constructive dialogue to address grievances and prevent further escalation. The United Nations stands ready to support efforts aimed at fostering dialogue, strengthening democratic governance and promoting sustainable peace in Tanzania.
