He was a victim of violence in his own family.

Today he lives in a home for children where he has found peace and security.

As a victim of abuse, for the purpose of legal proceedings, he had to recall the trauma he suffered and to speak about it.

“I testified because they forced me to beg in the street. I couldn’t wait for all these things to finally end, so that I can leave it all behind me.”

Testifying in court may be a terrifying experience for children, especially if they must testify several times, sometimes even in the presence of the perpetrator of the crime.

Thanks to the Child support units in legal proceedings, this boy avoided that traumatic experience.

The experts of the unit were by his side while he was making his statement, after having prepared him to undergo the whole process as painlessly as possible. He testifies from the home, via video link.

Child support units in legal proceedings were set up in 2015 resulting from the cooperation between UNICEF and the line government ministries and with the financial support of the European Union.

They are located in Belgrade, Kragujevac, Novi Sad and Nis.

The goal is avoiding traumatizing children that were victims of abuse any further, domestic violence and other criminal offences, as well as to provide them with psychological and social support.
