UNICEF and Nelt Group Equip Schools in Serbia with STEM Kits to Enhance 21st Century Skills

Belgrade, 18 December 2024 – As part of the joint program 21st Century Skills, implemented by UNICEF in collaboration with Nelt Group and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Serbia, 30 primary schools across Serbia have received STEM kits for hands-on learning. These kits will enable children and young people to gain knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through experiments and school projects.
The Wind and Weather STEM set is designed to teach students about weather conditions, symbols, and meteorological phenomena in an interactive and engaging way. It includes a mobile weather station and tools for measuring temperature, cloud cover, wind direction and speed, as well as precipitation. Students will learn about creating weather forecasts, cloud types, and symbols used on meteorological maps. The kits are tailored for both younger and older primary school students and can be used in subjects such as environmental studies, nature and society, geography, and biology, as well as in extracurricular activities and projects.
Equipping primary schools will contribute to providing quality education and skill development for every child.
“STEM kits will be immensely beneficial for our teaching process as they will allow students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical work, which is key to developing critical thinking. They will enable students to explore natural phenomena, making the acquired knowledge more enduring. Additionally, these kits will motivate students to engage in classroom learning,” said Milena Ergarac, Principal of the First Obrenovac Primary School.
Milica Socanac, a representative of the younger generation of Nelt Group owners and a member of UNICEF’s Business Board, highlighted the importance of investing in education.

At Nelt, we believe that education and the continuous development of skills are key to a successful future for children and young people,” said Milica Socanac.
Through its work in education, UNICEF contributes to enhancing the quality and modernisation of education by advancing digitalisation and expanding innovations. Tanja Rankovic, Education Specialist at UNICEF, emphasised the significance of the 21st Century Skill” initiative.
“Our goal is to provide children with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge needed for life and work in the modern world. STEM kits are one of the tools that help teachers and students develop not only academic knowledge but also teamwork, logical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills through exploration and practice. We are particularly pleased to implement this program in partnership with Nelt Group, which recognises the importance of investing in education. We thank them for their dedication and support in strengthening educational opportunities for every child,” said Tanja Rankovic.
The 21st Century Skills program is part of a three-year strategic partnership between UNICEF and Nelt Group in Serbia and the region, aimed at improving education and creating equal opportunities for all students in Serbia.
