Raising parents

Belgrade, 1 June 2025 ̶ Parenting is a journey, filled with love, challenges and endless learning. All parents want their child to grow up healthy, loved, and safe — but no one is ever fully prepared for parenting. No one has all the answers, but with the right support and resources, every parent and caregiver can nurture, guide and empower their child to thrive.
That’s why on 1 June 2025, Global Day of Parents, UNICEF is kicking off Parenting Month under the theme “Raising Parents”, because just as children grow and learn, so do their caregivers. Throughout the month, we’ll share inspiring stories, practical parenting tips and expert-backed advice to support nurturing, playful parenting, and cope with parental stress. We’ll also advocate for stronger policies and programmes that help families, especially the most vulnerable.
This year, we will also present the first “Benchmarking Report on Parenting Support Policies and Programmes in the Republic of Serbia,” developed through the joint collaboration of a national team of experts and partners, together with UNICEF experts from the Serbia Country Office and Headquarters in New York — united by a shared commitment to ensuring continuous, accessible, and high-quality support for every parent and caregiver in Serbia.
Importance of play
This year, we’re shining a spotlight on play, online and offline, a vital part of childhood that fuels learning, connection and skills development. The digital world has reshaped how children play, bringing exciting opportunities alongside challenges like online safety and screen time.
That’s why throughout the month of June we will be focusing on:
- The importance of play and playful interactions between caregivers and children;
- Practical tools (Bebbo application, Digital Compass for Parents) and guidance for safe, meaningful play in digital spaces.
And there’s more to celebrate! On 11 June 2025, UNICEF and partners will mark the International Day of Play (IDOP) with the theme “Choose Play – Every Day.” This global celebration is a powerful reminder that play isn’t just fun, it’s essential for children’s well-being, learning and development.
On the International Day of Play, we are calling on government institutions, businesses and other stakeholders to:
- Scale up services, including parenting programmes, that promote play and attachment
- Enable access to pre-school and learning through play for every 3-6 year old
- Ensure every child has access to safe, inclusive, and well-maintained play areas.
Let this Parenting Month be a time of mutual empowerment, support, learning, connection, and play – for every child and every parent.
