Highlights

Over the course of 18 months, UNICEF South Asia undertook an initiative to strengthen the implementation, monitoring and enforcement of national legal measures to protect breastfeeding in South Asia. Despite challenges such as strong industry lobbying, notable progress was made within a short timeframe. This included the adoption of new ways to monitor and enforce Code-compliant labelling provisions; the adoption of legally binding Code measures by some governments; updates of the legislative framework; the establishment of monitoring and enforcement mechanisms; the resolution of conflicts of interest; and the revision and strengthening of existing legislation. This report details the progress, challenges, and lessons learned across the region.
