Framework to improve the quality of maternal, infant and young child nutrition services
This guidance offers a framework that countries can use to improve the quality of maternal, infant, and young child nutrition services in South Asia.
Highlights
South Asia has made significant progress in reducing under-five mortality however progress on nutrition targets is uneven and requires acceleration in all South Asian countries. Quality nutrition services can lead to better outcomes for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and their infants. This guidance note details the variable quality of maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) services in South Asia and offers a standardized framework for improving the quality of these services. It examines three dimensions of service delivery: system readiness, provision of care, and experience of care. Countries can assess performance against this standard framework and invest in reducing gaps between current quality and the recommended standard. The framework stresses the need for quality planning, quality assurance, and quality improvement to improve MIYCN services in the region.
