Back-to-Back emergencies pushing children and families to the brink, UNICEF expresses concerns and support
Manila, 7 November 2025 — As parts of the Philippines reel from the devastation of Typhoon Tino (International Name: Kalmaegi), UNICEF expresses deep concern over the compounding impact of back-to-back disasters on children and families with the potential Super typhoon Uwan (International Name: Fung-Wong) approaching in a few days.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has reported 281 casualties[1] of children 18 years old and below, including children as young as four months. UNICEF expresses its deep condolences to families who have lost their loved ones. Widespread flooding, infrastructure damage, and landslides have displaced thousands of families, including at least 5,000 children. The Province of Cebu, which was hardest hit by the powerful 6.9 earthquake a few weeks back, also bears the brunt of Tino’s damage.
With Super typhoon Uwan expected to enter the country over the weekend, the risks to already-vulnerable populations are escalating.
“These overlapping emergencies are pushing children to the edge,” said UNICEF Philippines Representative Kyungsun Kim. “UNICEF stands ready to support the Philippine government in providing safe water, and restoring health services, education, and protection for children and their families.”
In line with the government’s leadership, and in coordination with humanitarian partners, UNICEF assistance has reached children and their families affected by the recent typhoons and earthquakes. UNICEF has delivered water, hygiene, health, nutrition, and education supplies, reaching approximately 75,000 people, including children. UNICEF is also providing technical, data management, and coordination support.
UNICEF has also pre-positioned additional emergency supplies across strategic locations and is ready to scale up its response at the request of the government.
