Statement by UNICEF Nigeria Representative Peter Hawkins on 7 children killed in an explosion in Zamfara State, north-west Nigeria
Abuja, 18 February 2021 - “UNICEF is deeply saddened by the deaths of seven children – all aged between 10 and 12 – who were killed by an unexploded ordinance in Magami village in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, north-west Nigeria.
“The children lost their lives when they were searching for firewood and came across an unexploded ordinance, which detonated. Three other children survived the explosion and are receiving treatment.”
“UNICEF commiserates with the families of these children and calls for action to ensure unexploded ordinance are not left where children can find them.”
“The tragic death of these children is another sad reminder that children are the first victims of unexploded ordinance; and the need for urgent action to protect children from it.”
