On the momentous occasion of the 60th anniversary of Maldives’ independence, UNICEF extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of Maldives.

This is not only a time to honour national progress, but also a moment to reflect on the profound transformation in the lives of Maldivian people, especially children over the past sixty years.

The lifetime of a child born in Maldives in 1965 – when the nation achieved its independence tells a powerful story of change. A story from a time when many children had limited access to health, education, and protection, to today, where the rights and wellbeing of children are increasingly placed at the centre of national development.

During the past six decades, Maldives has made significant progress in ensuring children both survive and thrive. Thanks to the strong leadership of the Government and sustained investment, the country has:

  1. Nearly eliminated child and maternal mortality
  2. Achieved universal primary and secondary education with gender parity
  3. Expanded access to basic social services to the atolls.
  4. Established strong legislative frameworks to safeguard child and human rights such as the Child Rights Protection Act, the Education Act, and the Juvenile Justice Act.

Most importantly, children are increasingly being recognised as active participants in their communities, with their voices informing national dialogue and policy on matters that impact their lives and future.

Yet, we are reminded that progress is not a destination – it is a journey. The landscape of childhood continues to evolve. Children in Maldives now grow up in a world shaped by economic challenges, climate change, digital transformation, changing family dynamics, and emerging health challenges.

These new realities call for renewed urgency, investment, and innovation.

Continuing to invest in children’s rights and wellbeing is not only a moral imperative – it is a strategic one. The early years of life lay the foundation for a society’s health, stability, and prosperity. By protecting and empowering every child and young person today, we are shaping a more just, resilient, and inclusive Maldives for tomorrow.

As Maldives marks this historic milestone of 60 years of Independence, UNICEF reaffirms its unwavering commitment to continue working hand in hand with the Government, civil society, communities, children, and young people to ensure that every child in every island – regardless of who they are – grows up safe, healthy, educated and empowered.

Happy 60th Independence Day, Maldives.
