Kaamiyaabu: Education and learning
Inclusive, safe and holistic learning for every child and young person
Maldives has achieved great success in education. But when it comes to preparing children to embrace the future, learning systems cannot rest on the successes of the past.
New students enter schools every year. New ways of learning offer greater opportunities. New skills are in demand in the world of work and adult life.
Keeping up with the new means that education systems need to adapt and transform. And transformation offers opportunities to reach more children – especially children with disabilities, children in remote island communities and children with complex learning profiles
But transformation also provides challenges.
This flagship initiative was created to provide a platform for UNICEF Maldives to work with government ministries, partners, donors, communities and students to navigate the challenges of change. The goal: to build on the successes of the past and transform learning and teaching for the future.
Education transformed
Kaamiyaabu translates into English as ’successful’.
This flagship initiative seeks learning transformation, so every child and young person completes secondary education and transitions from school to work and training. In particular, the flagship focuses on making sure that every learning opportunity is available for children and young people with disabilities, children in remote areas and children with complex learning profiles
It focuses on:
- Pathways for learning
To meet the needs of children with disabilities and complex learning profiles, the education sector needs to embrace personalized learning pathways that encourage and foster students’ strengths, interests, aspirations and abilities. With the Kaamiyaabu flagship, UNICEF Maldives provides support to education systems so they can respond to the particular learning needs of children with disabilities and young people at risk of not transitioning to upper-secondary school.
- Foundational learning and skills
The flagship also provides support so education systems can bolster foundational learning and introduce innovations such as digital learning to address geographical disparities In addition, UNICEF Maldives works with partners to introduce digital and green skills into curricula, so children and young people can transition to modern workplace environments.
- Safe and inclusive environments
Students don’t learn if they do not feel safe or included. Through the Kaamiyaabu flagship, UNICEF Maldives also provides support to schools, so they acquire and learn to use assistive technologies, making learning more accessible to children with disabilities. It also works with schools so they can respond to dangers such as bullying and violence and promote students’ physical and emotional well-being.
