A New Era of Youth Advocacy for UNICEF Lao PDR
UNICEF Lao PDR has named Chanphone Xongchaiyieu (Chan) as its first Youth Advocate.
UNICEF Lao PDR introduces an inspiring new voice into the climate conversation – Chanphone Xongchaiyieu, or simply Chan. This 18-year-old Houaphanh Province native has been tasked with an ambitious role as the organization's first Youth Advocate.
Chan, in this role, will shine a light on climate change, its environmental implications, and particularly, its impact on her generation. More broadly, she will use her platform to underscore the rights of young people in the world today.
She joins a burgeoning global cohort of youth passionately committed to fostering change for their peers.
"I feel honoured that UNICEF has chosen me to be their first youth advocate in Lao PDR. I will do my best in my role as a voice representing young people in Lao PDR and an advocate for climate and environmental action."
Chan's work with the youth-driven Houaphanh Youth Media, in partnership with Lao National Radio and UNICEF, and her active membership with Xamneua Young Volunteers, paint her as a relentless advocate for environmental awareness in her community.
Dr. Pia Rebello Britto, the UNICEF Lao PDR Representative, expresses optimism with Chan’s appointment. "We warmly welcome Chan to this new role," Dr. Britto shares, "Her dedication to creating a better world is truly remarkable. We believe her relentless efforts will amplify the push for a healthier, safer environment for everyone."
Chan’s appointment coincides with UNICEF's 50th anniversary in Lao PDR, signifying a new era of youth advocacy for the organization and an opportunity to magnify the voices of children across the country.
