Right to Participation and Right to Identity
When a girl or a boy is born, birth registration is very important. The official record of the child’s existence gives the child an identity and legal recognition. Yet, the Right to Identity is much more than this. It is the possibility for each child to develop his or her individuality, as a unique and unrepeatable child. Identity means belonging to a culture, sharing a language and maintaining family ties. Without an identity, there are no rights!
Participation is a right and one of the fundamental principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. To participate means to be part of something: to become interested, to reflect, to make decisions and to perform actions towards a common goal. If one wants to learn how to participate, the best thing to do is: to participate!
