Semey brings together young people for children’s rights and a greener future: UNICEF youth volunteers launch eco-initiative
Semey, 29 July 2025 – The first UNICEF youth event in Abai Region took place at the Alikhan Bokeikhan University as part of the national series of youth engagements, For the Rights and Well-being of Children and Young People, previously held in Aktau, Astana, Shymkent and Almaty. Hundreds of students, young activists and volunteers gathered to reflect on what a child-friendly future should look like — and how youth in the region can help shape it.
The event was held within the framework of a special UNICEF mission to the region and marked a key milestone in expanding youth volunteerism. Participants were welcomed by Dr Rashed Mustafa Sarwar, UNICEF Representative in Kazakhstan, alongside representatives of the Abai Region Akimat and Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Social Issues of the Alikhan Bokeikhan University, Mr Airat Bazenovich Bazenov.
“Young people in Abai Region are demonstrating an inspiring sense of social responsibility. You are not just participants — you are drivers of change. In a region where investment in human capital and environmental restoration is vital, it is you who can lead the way,” said Dr Sarwar, addressing the audience.
Through interactive sessions, participants explored some of the key challenges facing children and adolescents in Kazakhstan. According to the latest Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS), Abai Region has shown steady progress in birth rates, maternal health and ranks among the top regions in early childhood development. However, child overweight remains a concern, with 3.5 per cent of children in the region affected by obesity.
Participants discussed what it means to be a volunteer — not just helping others, but taking on leadership, building community, and making a real impact. Youth shared personal stories of their engagement in UNICEF-led initiatives, took part in storytelling sessions and spoke during an open mic.
One of the main themes of the event was environmental action. Young people were introduced to the Green Rising initiative — a global youth-led movement supported by UNICEF and partners. Plans were shared for a large-scale tree planting campaign this autumn, targeting areas affected by wildfires. Youth volunteers will play a central role in the implementation of this campaign across Abai Region.
Since 2020, more than 10,000 young people have joined UNICEF’s volunteer movement in Kazakhstan. In recent weeks alone, 170 new volunteers have registered in Abai Region. These initiatives go beyond learning — they empower young people to act in schools, universities, communities and even the most remote villages.
