UNICEF Jamaica Launches Summer Spark Challenge 2026
World Cup Edition to Boost Literacy and Numeracy
KINGSTON, July 3, 2026: The World Cup is here and UNICEF Jamaica has launched the Summer Spark Challenge 2026: World Cup Edition, an engaging online learning initiative designed to strengthen literacy and numeracy skills among children during the summer break.
Now in its fourth year, the Summer Spark Challenge is a flagship component of the Summer Online Academy, which is endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MOESYI), hosted on Learning Passport Jamaica. The programme currently targets students in Grades 1–3 and is expected to expand to Grades 4–6 by 2027.
The initiative aims to address the “summer slide” phenomenon or the learning loss that many children experience when school is out of session. Through a series of short, interactive modules, students can strengthen foundational reading, writing and numeracy skills at their own pace throughout the holiday period.
This year’s World Cup-themed edition adds an exciting and relevant twist to learning. Using football-inspired activities and challenges, students will explore reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving through real-world scenarios. Activities include calculating scores, analysing team statistics and interpreting short match stories that integrate literacy and numeracy concepts.
“The Summer Spark Challenge is about making learning enjoyable and accessible for every child, even when school is not in session,” said Dr. Rebecca Tortello, UNICEF Education Specialist. “By using familiar themes like sports, we help children see that reading and mathematics are not abstract subjects, but tools they use every day.”
The challenge is delivered through Learning Passport Jamaica (https://jamaica.learningpassport.org), a free digital learning platform that provides students, teachers and parents with access to high-quality educational resources. The platform includes interactive lessons, accessible stories featuring sign language videos, practice exercises and guidance to support learning at home.
As Jamaica continues its efforts to strengthen education recovery and resilience, UNICEF Jamaica views the Summer Spark Challenge as an innovative approach to supporting inclusive learning beyond the classroom. The initiative also encourages families and educators to take full advantage of the resources available on Learning Passport Jamaica.
The Summer Spark Challenge continues to foster a culture of summer learning, helping children return to school motivated, confident and ready to succeed.
