UNICEF and Partners Boost Jamaica’s Disaster Preparedness with WASH Shelter Kits
J$14.8M in essential supplies to strengthen shelter resilience across the island
KINGSTON, OCTOBER 16, 2025: Jamaica’s emergency shelters are now better equipped to protect families in times of crisis, thanks to a joint effort led by UNICEF Jamaica, in partnership with the N.C.B. Foundation and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
The partners handed over 400 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Shelter Kits, valued at J$14.8 million, to ODPEM as part of the Strengthening WASH Resilience to Climatic Events Post-Hurricane Beryl Programme, a J$43.8 million initiative aimed at improving public health and disaster preparedness in vulnerable communities.
“These WASH Shelter Kits are a vital step toward ensuring that emergency shelters across Jamaica can offer clean, safe, and dignified conditions for families displaced by disasters,” said Mohammad Mohiuddin, Representative (Officer-in-Charge), UNICEF Jamaica. “UNICEF is proud to partner with the N.C.B. Foundation and ODPEM to strengthen national disaster preparedness and safeguard public health in the face of climate-related emergencies.”
Food for the Poor (FFTP), serving as the implementing partner, sourced and procured the kits, each containing essential hygiene items such as disinfectants, soap, tissues, gloves, and sanitary supplies.
“These supplies help save lives and restore dignity after disaster strikes,” said Nakhle Hado, Director of Operations and Implementation, FFTP. “Together, we’re ensuring cleaner, safer shelter environments for families who need them most.”
Accepting the donation, Michelle Edwards, Acting Deputy Director General of ODPEM, said the kits will play a critical role in protecting displaced families. “This partnership strengthens our ability to respond swiftly and provide safe, sanitary conditions in shelters islandwide.”
Perrin Gayle, CEO of N.C.B. Foundation, reaffirmed the Foundation’s support for building resilient communities. “Prepared shelters save lives, but true resilience begins with compassion. Through the WASH programme, we’re ensuring Jamaicans have access to clean water and sanitation when it matters most.”
The WASH Shelter Kits will be distributed to emergency shelters through the Municipal Corporations. UNICEF continues to provide technical guidance and coordination support, helping communities manage and sustain WASH resources long after the project ends.
This initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to build climate-resilient, inclusive communities and aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
